There’s been a growing issue of thieves breaking into automaker’s factory lots and stealing brand new cars sitting there. While that problem is far from solved, three men who were targeting Cadillacs and Mustangs and now facing consequences after getting caught.
Learn why Burt Reynolds wasn’t buried for over two years after his death.
Authorities have been able to trace the men to several factory lot thefts dating back to 2024, all of them in the greater Detroit area. They would go to the facilities in the middle of the night, cut a hole in the security fence, then use sophisticated electronics to defeat the security features in the cars.
All of the vehicles they targeted were top-of-the-line models, like Hummer EVs, Cadillac Escalade IQs, and Shelby GT00s. They probably knew they’d get top dollar for those in the black market.
According to Detroit Free Press, Leondre Jones, 21; Lemel Watley-Neely, 25, and Jayvon Williams, 33, have all been charged with conducting a criminal enterprise. We wonder if more charges are coming, because it would seem like grand theft auto and some other crimes were also committed.
We’re not attorneys so maybe prosecutors know something we don’t. Or maybe these charges are just warmups for what’s coming next.
It’s great to see some of these car thieves facing consequences. For years, so many ducked anything resembling consequences too often because of an obsession with “social justice” instead of actual justice.
Now, we finally have car theft rates declining.
But these three were obviously not the only ones who have been swiping vehicles from factory storage lots. That problem has been raging out of control since 2019, just like car thefts in general. We doubt they bought the electronics to steal the cars themselves or learned how to use them on their own.
There are bigger fish out there who have been financing these thefts. Law enforcement needs to hunt down and arrest those guys so they can face justice as well.
