CATOOSA COUNTY, Ga. — It starts with a red light and a line of stopped cars. Then, in a split second, everything explodes into motion.
Dashcam video sent to us by viewer Grace Wilson shows a silver SUV slamming into traffic on Dietz Road in Catoosa County, triggering a violent chain reaction that sent one vehicle flipping through the air.
Watch it:
The Georgia State Patrol says this happened Wednesday just after 1 p.m. at the intersection of Dietz Road and GA-2, also known as Battlefield Parkway.
Troopers say a silver Ford Explorer, driven by an 83-year-old woman from Ringgold, hit three vehicles that were stopped at the traffic light: a white Kia Forte, a white GMC Sierra, and a brown Honda CR-V.
The force of that impact pushed the GMC Sierra into two more vehicles, a gray Honda Civic and a pink Lexus IS300.
As the Explorer began to overturn, troopers say it flipped into the air and struck the roof of the Lexus before crashing down in the right westbound lane of GA-2.
Debris from the wreck then struck a white Kia Sorento that was traveling westbound, Georgia State Patrol says.
Seven vehicles in total were involved.
The dashcam video shows the Explorer lifting off the ground and rolling as cars scatter and debris flies across the roadway.
Troopers say the drivers of the Explorer, the GMC Sierra, and the Honda CR-V were taken to a local hospital. The drivers of the Explorer and Sierra remain hospitalized, though their conditions are not yet known. The CR-V driver has since been released, the patrol says.
The driver of the Kia Sorento was also taken to a hospital with complaints of injuries and has since been released, according to Georgia State Patrol.
Investigators say the driver of the Explorer mistook the accelerator for the brake before the crash.
Charges are pending against that driver, the patrol says.
