SALT LAKE CITY — One person died and another was seriously injured in a six-car crash on Bangerter Highway in West Valley City on Sunday, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Cpl. Eddie Wright with UHP said the crash occurred just after 8 p.m. He said a Hyundai Tucson was allegedly driving recklessly, reportedly swerving between lanes while speeding.
“For an unknown reason, the Hyundai collided with six other vehicles that were stopped at a traffic light at 4100 South,” Wright said. “Following the impact, the Hyundai caught fire.”
Wright said a driver from one of the other five cars managed to pull the Hyundai driver, who was the only occupant, out of the car. The driver was taken to the hospital in an ambulance in critical condition.
“Unfortunately, the driver of the Hyundai succumbed to their injuries after arriving at the hospital,” Wright said.
One other driver of a Toyota Highlander that was hit needed to be extricated and was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition, he said. All others involved in the crash were evaluated at the scene and released.
The Utah Department of Transportation said all lanes were blocked due to the crash on northbound Bangerter Highway at 4100 South in West Valley City.
Traffic was backed up to 4700 south as crews worked to clear the scene and help those who were injured.
Police were back at the scene on Monday afternoon to follow up on the investigation, which caused additional traffic delays just after 2 p.m.
