When they arrived, firefighters found that a four-door sedan had collided with the rear of a dump truck. The car was fully engulfed in flames.
Before firefighters arrived, bystanders had been able to rescue the unresponsive driver from the vehicle, but the driver died at the scene.
A ruptured fuel tank from the car complicated firefighting efforts, and several tires exploded, producing loud, explosion-like sounds. But firefighters said they did not locate any ammunition.
Once the fire was extinguished and the scene was declared safe, control of the scene was turned over to state police. Candia firefighters remained at the scene to assist with traffic and reopening Route 101.
“The department commends the courageous bystanders who, putting their own safety aside, acted swiftly to rescue the occupant from the vehicle,” the Candia Fire Department said in a statement.
