MIDWOOD, Brooklyn (WABC) — A driver was killed after careening a stolen car into a building in Midwood, Brooklyn, early Monday morning, police say.
It happened around 1:45 a.m. on Flatbush Avenue.
The rightful owner of the crashed Honda Civic is a Lyft driver who said he briefly left his car unattended, but locked, while we went to use an ATM.
The driver, named Ali, said at first the suspect demanded his phone but he refused.
That is when he says the suspect jumped behind the wheel as soon as he unlocked his car. He said he flagged down police and when cops confronted the suspect, he floored it.
Investigators say the driver then sped off before crashing further south on Flatbush Avenue, where the car ricocheted off a building from impact.
The crash ripped the door completely off a building and split the car into two pieces. The engine and battery were lying on the ground and part of the car rolled over where it was left lying in the roadway upside down.
Witnesses said it looked like a bomb went off at the scene of the crash and sparks and debris went flying.
The 41-year-old driver was found lying in the roadway. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His identity has not yet been released.
