After receiving a Chevrolet Equinox as a gift from his son, reverend Willie Tyler took the vehicle to a Jiffy Lube in the Chicago, Illinois, area for an oil change.
However, what should have been routine maintenance resulted in a mistake that left Tyler’s engine completely dead.
“I saw some smoke, I didn’t know what it was. So, I thought it was somebody else. I kept going, and then I looked up again and looked down at my car, it says oil pressure low,” explained Tyler to local ABC affiliate WLS.
After looking at the car again, Jiffy Lube technicians discovered that the wrong oil filter had been used, a mistake that directly caused the catastrophic engine failure.

Tyler and his son Timothy demanded compensation, but claimed to have been offered $3,339 to get a used engine instead of being given the $8,237 needed for a new one.
At another Jiffy Lube location in the Chicago area, resident Greg Gold experienced a similar issue, leaving him with a dead car due to an oil drain plug that was left too loose.
“The minute I left the oil change; the car dumped all the oil out,” said Gold. “The oil light came on. I pulled over, the engine started knocking, and the engine seized right there.”
Gold was offered just $2,000 in compensation for the mistake, well below the true value of his car as was the case with Tyler.

But after local media got involved, the franchise paid Tyler the full $8,237 for a new engine and handed Gold a $5,500 settlement.
Jiffy Lube International, Inc. stated that it is “committed to supporting a consistent and high-quality service experience” at all its service centers, which it added are run by independent franchisees.
