TikTok user @grasshopper201 purchased a 2026 Civic Hybrid Sport Touring from his local Honda dealership on Friday, January 2.
The next day, as he tried to set the car up with its companion app, he made a shocking discovery when entering his vehicle’s information.
“Start doing the app and everything, type in the VIN number on my phone and it says that my car is still at the dealership,” he explained.
After investigating further, he realized that the dealership had given him the wrong vehicle in terms of the exact unit he filled out paperwork for.

While the car he drove home was the exact model he requested down to color, trim, and spec, this was a major issue since it created a discrepancy in key registration and car insurance paperwork for the vehicle.
“This car doesn’t belong to all the paperwork that I have. This car technically still belongs to the dealership,” he accurately explained while asking social media users in the auto sales business for assistance.
“Not a huge deal it does happen that’s a big no-no for them, but it does happen. They just need to fix the paperwork,” advised one user.
“This happens sometimes, it shouldn’t but it does… Just go in when they open and get the right one delivered. Ask them for a store credit for the inconvenience, use it for accessories or oil change and they will more than likely oblige,” suggested another user claiming 30 years in the business.

“Just go back in and sign new paperwork for the one you’re in or swap cars for the one that matches the paperwork,” commented a third.
Ultimately, this is exactly what @grasshoper201 did, allowing him to keep the specific unit he had already driven home while easily updating the paperwork at the dealership to avoid any registration or insurance issues.
