The new road rule specifically allows police to tow the vehicle of any reckless driver, whether its their first offense or not.
While a similar law was signed into effect by Wisconsin Democratic Governor Tony Evers in 2023, its effectiveness was restricted due to needing the person cited for reckless driving to also own the vehicle.
The latest law eliminates this requirement, allowing any vehicle involved in a reckless driving offense to be impounded.
In Milwaukee, the new law has resulted in 31 vehicles used by reckless drivers being impounded as of Thursday since being signed into effect in October 2025.

To get the impounded vehicle back, drivers will have to pay a towing fee of at least $150, plus any outstanding fines they have and a $25 daily storage fee.
Drivers will also be on the clock to get their vehicles back, as law enforcement has been given the authority to get rid of impounded cars if they remain unclaimed for 90 days.
In the cases of stolen or borrowed cars, police must attempt to track down the proper owner of the vehicle.
