CALDWELL, Idaho (CBS2) — New Year’s Eve kept Caldwell police busy, with officers responding to more than 100 calls for service during overnight hours as celebrations brought increased activity across the city.
The Caldwell Police Department says officers handled 113 calls for service between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., a period that included increased patrols and traffic enforcement aimed at impaired driving and other public safety concerns.
Police report there were no shootings, use-of-force incidents, or vehicle pursuits during the overnight shift.
Increased Staffing for Holiday Night
According to the department, 37 officers were deployed throughout the city for the 12-hour period. Officers were assigned to patrol, DUI and traffic enforcement, Operation Safe Streets, and a Quick Reaction Force, with support from the department’s Real Time Crime Information Center.
Police say officers conducted 131 traffic stops, made 19 arrests, and arrested eight people for DUI. Officers also recovered a stolen vehicle after receiving a hit from a FLOCK license plate reader system.
Additional arrests included six people on narcotics-related charges and three people arrested on warrants or parole violations. Officers also issued five misdemeanor traffic citations.
Drone Program Used During Calls
Police also used the department’s Drone as First Responder program during the night, deploying drones 16 times to assist officers during calls.
According to police, the drones were used to locate a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run, help identify a suspect in an aggravated assault, and provide information to officers responding to a disturbance.
Caldwell police say the drone program allows officers to gather information before arriving at a scene, which can help determine whether additional resources are needed.
Daytime Outreach Ahead of Celebrations
Earlier in the day, officers visited local bars and restaurants to speak with owners and staff about alcohol service ahead of New Year’s Eve crowds, a step police say is intended to reduce alcohol-related incidents later in the night.
Police say increased staffing and planning helped manage the higher call volume typically associated with the holiday.
