FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) — A single-car crash in Fayetteville on Wednesday night left three high school students dead and a driver with life-threatening injuries.
It happened just before 7:25 p.m. in the 2700 block of Rosehill Road. When police officers arrived, they found that a gray 2024 Honda Civic had run off the road and hit a telephone pole. It went down an embankment and crashed into a tree.
The one survivor was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill in critical condition. The other three people died at the scene, Fayetteville Police said. Those three were football players at E.E. Smith High School. Grief counselors will be on hand Thursday at the school for anyone who needs them.
The school announced that this Friday's football game against South View has been postponed.
"Our community's heart is broken. These young men were part of the Golden Bulls family and of Fayetteville's future, and their loss is felt across our city," Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said. "We are keeping the injured individual in our prayers and ask our community to join us in lifting up all who are hurting."
On Thursday, Fayetteville Police identified the driver as Dymond N. Monroe, 21, of Fayetteville. She remains in critical condition at UNC Hospitals.
FPD also identified one of the boys who died as Jai'Hyon Lamont Elliot, 18. The two other victims were both 17, and police did not release their names. All were from Fayetteville.
