Four people were killed in a head-on crash just after the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day, Thursday (Jan. 1) in Collier County.
The three-car crash happened on State Road 82, west of Corkscrew Road at around 12:27 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The FHP report said a Kia Forte and a Kia Sedona were both traveling east on State Road 82. The Kia Sedona was ahead of the Kia Forte when the Kia Forte moved into the westbound lane to attempt to pass the Kia Sedona.
A Subaru Ascent, which had four passengers in it, was traveling westbound.
The Kia Forte and Subaru Ascent collided head on, the report said. The Kia Forte rotated and and ended up colliding with the Kia Sedona.
The driver of the Kia Forte, a 30-year-old woman from Immokalee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Subaru, a 51-year-old Fort Myers woman, and a passenger, a 25-year-old Fort Myers woman, were also pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP troopers said three other passengers in the Subaru included an 85-year-old Fort Myers woman, a 51-year-old Fort Myers man, and a 25-year-old Fort Myers man. They were all taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The 85-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The crash remains under investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
