FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) — New details have been released about the Fayetteville crash that killed three E.E. Smith High School football players.
The crash happened two weeks ago on Rosehill Road, shortly after football practice. Fayetteville police say 21-year-old Dymond Monroe and her 19-year-old sister Destini Genwright were on their way to their younger brother's 18th birthday party, with several E.E. Smith football players riding in their cars.
Investigators believe both sisters were racing in separate vehicles.
According to court documents obtained by ABC11 Eyewitness News, police, based on video footage from Rosehill Road, allege that Monroe's car, carrying the three football players, reached 92 mph before the crash. Genwright's car was reportedly traveling 76 mph in a 45-mph zone.
Another video reportedly shows both sisters speeding alongside each other, with Monroe's car at 73 mph and Genwright's at 66 mph.
In a 911 call, Fayetteville police say Genwright stated her sister was behind her, but as they approached Rosehill Road, Monroe passed her on the outside lane, and something happened to the passenger-side tire. Genwright also stated that Monroe's car hit a pole and then a tree. After pulling over, she called 911.
Court documents also indicate that Genwright stated the sisters were not racing, despite claims to the contrary.
On Wednesday morning, Genwright appeared in court for a brief hearing to be formally advised of the charges against her: four misdemeanors related to racing, speeding, reckless driving, and an insurance violation.
Monroe, who remains hospitalized in critical condition, is also facing four misdemeanor charges and three felony counts of involuntary manslaughter. She has not yet had a court date set.
Genwright is expected back in court in December, while Monroe's court date is pending as she remains in the hospital.
