The A40 westbound is closed between the A38 (Longford Roundabout) and the A417 (Over Roundabout).
The fire, which has now been extinguished and cleared according to traffic monitoring site Inrix, has damaged the carriageway.
The A40 requires resurfacing before it can reopen, according to National Highways.
