New annual registration fees for alternative fuel vehicles will begin Wednesday, Oct. 1, with fees upward of $100.
Officials say postcards were sent out in early September informing vehicle owners of the fees that will be due Saturday, Nov. 1.
Created by House Bill 164, the fees for alternative fuel vehicles will primarily affect electric and hybrid vehicles, and those that do not use gasoline or diesel fuel, essentially avoiding the fuel tax that those driving vehicles with fuel combustion engines pay.
The fuel tax is used to maintain state roadways, and money from the new alternative fuel registration will also fund road improvements. For electric and other fuel-type vehicles less than 6,000 pounds, the annual fee is $110, increasing incrementally by weight class up to $900 for a vehicle more than 26,000 pounds.
A non-plug-in electric vehicle fee starts at $60 for one less than 6,000 pounds, and a plug-in less than 6,000 pounds is $85.
