The latest figures bring the total number of new EVs registered so far this year to 276,635 units. That compares to 213,544 by the same period last year, marking a 29.5% rise in EV registrations. This also means that the year-to-date EV market share now stands at 21.9%, compared to 17.2% by the same period last year.
Rising EV registration figures highlight the growing consumer confidence in EVs, helped along by public charging infrastructure being in a better position than ever, longer battery range, and prices of EVs starting to become comparable to their ICE counterparts.
When it comes to the Electric Car Grant, the first cars initially eligible were only confirmed in August, so it’s unlikely for this to have made the biggest boost to August’s registration figures. However, with eligibility of models continuing to be confirmed, and 35 specific models now eligible for discounts between £1,500 and £3,750, the grant could make a more beneficial impact once September registration figures are accounted for. September has historically been a busy month for registrations of all car types, as many buyers hold off on registering their new cars in anticipation of receiving the latest number plate date.
“August was the best month yet this year for EV market share and, while it is often volatile due to low overall volumes, the overall trend is positive. September will be critical, with the new number plate factor typically driving around one in seven new car registrations for the year. There is now a vast choice of electric models across all segments and many consumers will also, for the first time in three years, benefit from a grant to help them switch to electric. With more models being added to the Government’s Electric Car grant each week, there is now every reason for drivers to make the switch, helping deliver both economic growth and decarbonisation.”
“One in four new cars are full EV and one in three have a plug. This is great news. char.gy continues with its roll out of on street charging solutions to make the transition as seamless as possible, and we will continue to put the driver, and their community, first with our network rollout.”
“Our Electric Car Grant is driving down costs, making it cheaper than ever to go electric whilst putting money back in people’s pockets as part of the Plan for Change. This summer we’ve announced 35 models as eligible for the discounts and results speak for themselves – EV sales share in August is up 24% on July.
Whilst we know the automotive sector continues to face global pressures, this Government is firmly on the side of industry, backing UK manufacturers with our modern industrial strategy, as the zero emission vehicle mandate gives industry the certainty it needs.”
