MIDTOWN (WABC) — A driver led police on a pursuit through the streets of midtown Tuesday morning smashing into cars, including a police cruiser, before being taken into custody, authorities said.
Police were flagged down by a driver whose car was struck in front of 300 Park Ave. just before 7 a.m.
That's when the pursuit began as officers went to stop the vehicle at East 14th Street and Union Square East and their police cruiser was struck before heading north.
The driver fled the scene and crashed into another vehicle at Fifth Avenue and East 59th Street, also side swiping several more vehicles along the way.
It continued on to East 50th Street and Lexington Avenue, where police with their guns out, ordered the suspect out of the car and were able to take the driver into custody.
The suspect was later identified as 45-year-old Jose Foster. He has been charged with five counts of assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, unlawfully fleeing from a police officer, five counts of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and running a red light.
Martina Minor was setting up her food cart at Park Avenue South and 22nd Street when the Hyundai hit her Mercedes.
She exclusively spoke to Eyewitness News and said she was in shock.
"It felt like he was scratching like big noise and I was honking like stop and he kept doing it," Minor said.
Minor had no idea her car was not the only one that was hit.
"Why didn't he stop? A normal person would hear something and stop right away," Minor said.
