LINCOLN, R.I. (WJAR) — A man who captured the harrowing moments of a car bursting into flames, along Route 146 in Lincoln Saturday night spoke exclusively to NBC 10.
The accident happened around 10:00 p.m. Saturday, and involved a car that burst into flames.
Witnesses say a Medical Examiner's truck was also spotted on scene, alongside troopers from the Rhode Island State Police and first responders from Lincoln.
Mike Picard, who was driving home on Rt 146 Saturday night, says the accident happened on the southbound side of the highway, just before the Wilbur Road overpass.
"Literally, headlights went up, within 14 seconds it was already engulfed in flames," Picard said.
He pulled off to the side of the road, his coworker capturing the now roaring flames while he called 911.
Picard captured the moments the car burst into flames and when first responders appeared on scene.
"Unfortunately by the time they did get there, the car had been burning for 7 minutes," Picard said.
All Southbound lanes just before exit 7B were shut down for several hours.
Picard says, in that time no rescues were made, but he did see a truck from the medical examiner's office arrive, after just about half an hour.
"There was explosions, tires bursting, a lot of things happening," Picard said. "By the time they put the fire out, there was nothing left of the vehicle. Everything was gone."
The Rhode Island State Police are leading the investigation.
Police have yet to reveal if charges have been filed, the number of injuries or fatalities, or the cause of the crash.
