CALDWELLS, NJ — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash as she was getting off a bus in Caldwell on Friday night, authorities say.
The crash took place around 6:30 p.m. on the 400-block of Bloomfield Avenue, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Caldwell Police Department.
Caldwell police officers arrived at the scene to find Sharon Thomas, 56, of Caldwell, unconscious in the roadway. Thomas was transported to Mountainside Hospital in Montclair and pronounced deceased at 7:22 p.m.
Witnesses told police that a vehicle hit Thomas after she exited a NJ Transit bus and was crossing Bloomfield Avenue. The driver allegedly stopped and got out of the car, looked at Thomas lying in the road, then got back in the vehicle and fled the scene.
A second vehicle struck Thomas while she was still in the roadway. That driver pulled over and remained at the scene until police arrived, prosecutors said.
A police investigation continues, authorities said Saturday. No additional details were immediately available.
Authorities said anyone with information can contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.
