Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating a Mims hit-and-run which claimed the life of a 61-year-old motorcyclist earlier this week are now searching for a vehicle that could be connected to the crash.
The deadly crash happened at about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at U.S. 1 and Orbiter Court. Troopers issued an update saying that investigators are searching for an orange-colored Chevrolet Sonic hatchback. The 2012 to 2016 model vehicle, likely with front-end and windshield damage, may be tarped, hidden or could turn up for repairs.
Investigators said that a vehicle was heading northbound, as was the unidentified rider of a 2025 Jiang Zhon motorcycle, when the crash occurred.
The vehicle struck the rear of the motorcycle along the darkened road, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown into the roadway, troopers reported. The vehicle then left the scene. The driver did not report the crash.
Troopers ask that anyone with information about the crash, the unidentified driver or the vehicle matching the description of the one provided contact CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-TIPS.
