A 57-year-old Melbourne woman continues to recover from minor injuries after a Beechcraft 55 aircraft crashed into her car during an emergency landing on Interstate 95.
The incident happened about 5:45 p.m. Dec. 8 in the southbound lanes of the interstate just south of State Road 520 near Cocoa, with the fixed-wing aircraft striking a 2023 Toyota Camry and coming to a rest partially atop a concrete barrier.
The pilot, a 27-year-old Orlando man, and his 27-year-old male passenger from Temple Terrace, whose names were not released, were not injured in the crash. The plane is owned by Tailwinds Flying out of Merritt Island, Brevard County Fire Rescue officials reported.
The pilot had reported engine problems moments earlier, federal authorities said.
The Melbourne woman, also not named by officials, was seen being helped out of the heavily damaged Toyota in a video posted to social media, with passersby asking how she was doing and an emergency worker saying, “God is good.”
She was taken to Viera Hospital for treatment.
“Do you know how much I loved my car?” she said, laughing nervously, in a video taken moments after the plane landed.
“Am I the only one who got hit?”
The crash, during the evening commute, caused a roadblock that slowed traffic in the area to a crawl through the evening, shutting down the inside and center southbound lanes.
The FAA was contacted and is the lead agency investigating the collision. Florida Highway Patrol will conduct its own investigation.
Monday’s incident was the second time within a month that a small plane touched down on a major Brevard County roadway.
On Thursday, Nov. 7, a small plane landed on the grass along State Road 407. In that case, the unidentified aircraft swept down without incident on State Road 407 between Interstate 95 and State Road 528. The pilot was seen walking around the aircraft moments later. An investigation is still ongoing in that case.
The crash-landing on the interstate was also was the second emergency plane landing of the day in Central Florida, the first happening in Volusia County
The FAA reported that a Cessna 172 crashed in Deland, around 2 p.m. Two people were on board the plane, which landed on Jacobs Road near Plymouth Avenue. The FAA will investigate.
