Driverless taxi/Ansa
A new scenario is unfolding for American cities: with the arrival of robotaxis, first responders must adapt to an unprecedented technological reality. Firefighters and police officers are participating in specialized training courses to learn how to respond to accidents, stop autonomous vehicles, and ensure safety on the streets.
The sessions, launched by companies such as Zoox, Waymo, and Tesla, cover situations ranging from pulling a vehicle over when it loses connection to managing a car stuck on the roadway. Zoox, which has a total of 50 vehicles, has organized pilot courses and targeted workshops, while Waymo, with a current fleet of 2,000 cars operating across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta, reports having trained over 20,000 operators to ensure interactions are increasingly safe and efficient. Tesla, on the other hand, has trained personnel in Austin before launching its commercial service.
However, challenges remain. Electric vehicles’ lithium-battery-powered systems can catch fire, making extinguishing difficult, and onboard camera footage is accessible only with a warrant. In some cities, such as San Francisco, driverless taxis have already slowed emergency responses and public transportation, highlighting the need for clear protocols and close collaboration between companies and law enforcement.
Zoox, a subsidiary of Amazon, has started operating its vehicles on the Las Vegas Strip. The cars are symmetrical for four passengers, lack a steering wheel, and can move in both directions. The training also teaches how to react if sensors fail to detect sirens or hand signals correctly.
Authorities have noted that in the past there have been slight delays in emergency responses, as well as incidents where vehicles obstructed access for intervention teams. Companies have confirmed that they take these reports seriously and continuously update their technology to enhance safety.
