A Bracknell man has been arrested after a female army officer was killed in a car crash in Surrey.
Captain Elizabeth Godwin, 28, of the Life Guards, was killed in a crash in Lightwater, Surrey, on Friday, September 5.
The other driver, a 30-year-old man from Bracknell, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and being unfit to drive due to alcohol.
Police officers were called to the A322 Lightwater Bypass between the M3 junction and the Red Road roundabout at around 8pm following a collision involving a silver Nissan and a silver BMW.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of paramedics, Captain Godwin died at the scene.
Captain Godwin’s mother said today, “We are devastated by the loss of Lizzie and ask for privacy at this deeply distressing time.”
Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying any potential witnesses to this collision.

Captain Godwin joined The Life Guards in 2020, winning the Sword of Honour at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as the best of her intake.
She played polo and hockey for the Army and also took part in ceremonial duties, including Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and the King’s coronation.
At the time of her death she was serving in the Army Training Regiment in Pirbright.
Captain Godwin, who grew up in Devon and attended Exeter School, was interviewed at Hyde Park Barracks by the magazine Tatler for its October 2023 issue.
She described the adjustments made to her uniform, which had been primarily worn by men since the unit’s formation in 1661, and the pressures of leading a 29-strong troop.
