The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX is the new king of performance pickups, but for how long?
The rebooted model is powered by a 777 hp supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that is set to make it far and away the most powerful gas truck on sale when deliveries start later this year. Unless …
The Ford F-150 Raptor R is the truck that it dethroned. Its supercharged 5.2-liter V8 is rated at a now-measly sounding 720 hp.
The “Predator” engine has more potential, however, as was on display in the last Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, which had a 760 hp version. That’s within spitting distance of the TRX, but Ford would probably want to blow by it to make a statement.

The Mustang GTD’s 815 hp version probably isn’t suitable for a pickup, but Ford has one that is. It unveiled a project Raptor R at last year’s SEMA Show that had its stock 2.65-liter Whipple supercharger swapped for a 3.0-liter blower that helped boost the V8 to 900 hp.
Ford indicated that it was thinking about offering it as a kit in the Ford Racing parts catalog, which would be cool, but that wouldn’t count in the official factory truck battle with the TRX.
The TRX does come up short against the Raptor R in one respect, but in a good way. The Ram’s starting price is $102,590 while the Ford’s is $113,525.
As for Chevy, well, it doesn’t have anything in this segment … yet. General Motors is set to launch a new line of V8 engines in 2027, so it’s possible that it will finally throw its hat in the ring soon enough.
