Four people have been killed in a crash between a car and a tanker on the N3 between Estcourt and the Tugela River in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Sindi Msimang says the Johannesburg-bound lanes at the accident scene are closed.
Traffic officers are diverting northbound traffic onto the centre median.
Msimang says, “It is alleged that the light motor vehicle had a tyre burst while travelling on the southbound. It capsized and landed on the northbound. That’s where it collided head-on with the tanker.”
Emergency and road incident management systems (RIMS) officials are currently on the scene.
Authorities say the severity of the crash, combined with the risks posed by the tanker’s highly flammable cargo, has necessitated stricter-than-usual safety controls.
Motorists are urged to approach the area with extreme caution and to comply with all instructions from officials.
