The law with the biggest potential to catch drivers by surprise is a new road rule making it a citable offense to drive just 1 mph over the posted speed limit anywhere in New York State.
Drivers risk earning themselves a maximum fine of $150 if caught speeding 1 to 10 mph over, but the real threat comes with the three points added to a driver’s license if they’re caught violating the law.

While there is pushback against the law, it seems set to take effect at the start of February, and will put the burden on drivers to be more aware of their car’s condition and ensure they aren’t ignoring key maintenance.
Finally, drivers feeling the need for speed will want to hit the brakes when approaching school zones in Florida, where a new law threatens to hit them with $100 fines.
The citations will be issued automatically to drivers caught going 10 mph over the school zone’s speed limit by the 14 new enforcement cameras installed near eight schools in the Lakeland area.
