GM’s Chevy Equinox EV was the best-selling non-Tesla EV in the U.S., and Cadillac had three of the top 10 EVs in the luxury segment through the end of September.
Automakers on Oct. 1 began releasing sales results for September and Q3 2025, turning in a mix of performances.
General Motors reported Q3 2025 U.S. vehicle sales were up 8% from the like year-earlier quarter, on continued strength in both electric and gas-powered vehicles.
GM set another EV sales record in Q3, with 66,501 deliveries. Industry-wide EV sales continued to surge as customers sought to take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit. GM’s year to date total EV sales in the U.S. year to date now stand at 144,668, up 105% from a year earlier.
With the federal EV tax credit expiring Sept. 30, GM said its financial arm, GM Financial, would acquire eligible EVs from dealers before the expiration date and apply a down payment to secure the credit for future buyers.
Chevrolet Equinox EV is the best-selling non-Tesla EV in the U.S. Cadillac, meanwhile, had three of the 10 best-selling EVs in the luxury segment through the end of September: LYRIQ (No. 2), OPTIQ (No. 5), and VISTIQ ( No. 6).
GM led the industry again in overall sales and continues to grow in gas-powered vehicles. GM’s crossovers and SUVs reached a new record in Q3. GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse, and Buick Envista all had their best-ever Q3 sales. GM is on track to lead the full-size pickup market for the sixth straight year, and to top the full-size SUV market for the 51st consecutive year.
Sales for the year’s first three quarters were up 10% to 2.2 million vehicles, the company’s best pace in a decade.
Ford Motor Company extended its growth streak in Q3 2025, increasing U.S. sales 8.2% and marking seven consecutive months of sales gains as customers continued to choose Ford’s lineup of gas, hybrid and electric vehicles, supported by fast-growing digital services from Ford Pro.
Ford’s total sales for Q3 were 545,522, which included nearly 314,000 pickups and SUVs.
Electrified vehicles, which include mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric, totaled nearly 86,000 sales, representing 16% of the company’s total sales mix.
Ford also announced a workaround to extend the federal EV tax credit to customers: Ford Credit will let dealers continue offering competitive lease payments through Dec. 31, supplemented with a $1,000 incentive per leased vehicle.
FCA reported U.S. total sales of 324,825 vehicles in Q3 2025, an increase of 6% over the same period last year. Total commercial fleet sales increased 22%. September total sales increased 16% compared to the same month last year.
The Jeep, Chrysler, Ram and FIAT brands all saw sales growth in Q3, of 11%, 45%, 26% and 2%, respectively.
At the model level, the largest year-over-year increases were seen by the Jeep Wagoneer, up 122%; Chrysler Voyager, up 65%; and Dodge Durango, up 44%.
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported September 2025 U.S. sales of 185,748 vehicles, up 14.2% on a volume basis and up 9.5% on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis versus September 2024. Sales of electrified vehicles for the month totaled 85,092 up 8.1% on a volume basis and up 3.6% on a DSR basis representing 45.8% of total sales volume.
For Q3 2025, TMNA reported sales of 629,137 vehicles, up 15.9% on a volume basis and up 14.4% on a DSR basis versus Q3 2024. Sales of electrified vehicles for the third quarter totaled 282,794 up 10.5% on a volume basis and up 9.1% on a DSR basis representing 44.9% of total sales volume.
Toyota division posted September sales of 158,959 vehicles, up 13.4% on a volume basis and up 8.7% on a DSR basis. For the quarter, Toyota division reported sales of 537,528 vehicles, up 16.4% on a volume basis and up 14.9% on a DSR basis.
Lexus division posted September sales of 26,789 vehicles, up 19.4% on a volume basis and up 14.4% on a DSR basis. For the quarter, Lexus division reported sales of 91,609 vehicles, up 13.1% on a volume basis and up 11.6% on a DSR basis.
American Honda (AHM) posted sales of 105,097 units in September despite leaner inventories of some popular models, to maintain year-to-date sales increase of 3.9% through the first three quarters of 2025.
Honda brand September sales totaled 95,391 units, up 4.1% YTD, with record sales of electrified models.
Acura brand posted September sales of 9,706 units, with SUV sales up 9.0% year to date despite low inventory of key SUV models (MDX and RDX).
Hyundai Motor America reported September total sales of 71,003 units, a 14% increase compared with September 2024 and an all-time September record. Hyundai set September total sales records for the Elantra family, Santa Fe HEV and IONIQ 5.
EV sales reached new heights, jumping 153% compared with September 2024.
In Q3 2025, Hyundai established a new record for Q3 total and retail sales. Hyundai total sales were 239,069 units, a 13% increase over Q3 2024 total sales and the best Q3 in the company’s history. Hyundai achieved a strong retail performance in the quarter, with sales rising 11% year-over-year to 209,520 units. Hyundai also set new Q3 total and retail sales records for Elantra N, Palisade, IONIQ 5 and Santa Fe Family.
Kia America delivered 65,507 units in September, an 11% increase over September 2024, and achieved a new record in Q3 2025 with any-quarter sales totaling 219,637 units. This brings the total sales for the first three quarters of 2025 to a record-breaking 636,148 units while the year-to-date sales through Kia dealers also set a new record with 583,163 units through September.
These record-setting performances represent 9% and 10% increases, respectively, over the same period last year, and have Kia on pace for a third consecutive annual sales record.
Six Kia models — K5 (+85%); Carnival (+48%); Telluride (+13%); Sportage (+13%); Sorento (+7%); and K4 (+4%) posted notable increases over the first three quarters of 2024. And through September, sales of Kia’s electrified models (+26%), sedans (+19%) and SUVs (+6%) increased over the same period last year, illustrating the popularity of the brand’s diverse model line-up.
Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) reported 46,007 vehicle sales for September 2025 and year-to-date sales of 483,037, a 2.1% decrease.
Crosstrek remained the top seller for the fifth month in a row with 14,321 vehicles sold. Outback sales followed with 12,406 vehicles sold, and Forester sold 10,954 vehicles.
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported total September sales of 26,169 vehicles, a decrease of 12.3% compared to September 2024. Year-to-date sales totaled 319,664 vehicles sold, an increase of 2% compared to the same time last year. With 24 selling days in September, compared to 23 the year prior, the company posted a decrease of 16% on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis.
Certified pre-owned sales totaled 5,974 vehicles in September, an increase of 6.5% compared to September 2024. Year-to-date sales totaled 56,523, an increase of 0.1% compared to the same time last year.
Mitsubishi Motors North America reported Q3 2025 sales of 19,647, driving the brand’s year-to-date total sales to 73,400, the second-best year-to-date (YTD) performance in four years.
The brand’s electrified flagship, Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, set a quarterly sales record of 2,403, up 5.4% year-over-year (YOY). During the quarter, September alone represented the second-best month in the history of the nameplate, building off a strong August that is now the third-best month ever. YTD sales of Outlander Plug-in Hybrid were also up, totaling 5,841, an increase of 5.9% over 2024.
The recently redesigned Outlander continued to be MMNA’s volume leader with 7,323 sales for the quarter.
Other bright spots this quarter included Eclipse Cross with 4,077 sales for the quarter and 12,342 YTD, up 21.2% over last year, and Outlander Sport with 3,080 quarterly sales and 14,958 YTD, an increase of 27.8% over 2024.
Third quarter YOY sales performance was impacted primarily by the discontinuation of the Mirage and Mirage G4 models. Looking forward, Mitsubishi Motors’ core SUV lineup is forecasted to deliver YOY increases, with full-year 2025 SUV sales surpassing those of 2024.
