CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WJAR) — Cumberland school administrators confirmed that no children were on board a school bus that was involved in a crash Thursday morning.
The crash happaned on Nate Whipple Highway and right across from a house.
"Right around 9 a.m., we heard what sounded like a horn and then a big crash. We both looked out the front window and saw a school bus, a car, and flames in the car," said Steven Bacon, as he described the scene.
Steven and his wife immediately jumped into action and grabbed a fire extinguisher from their own home and began to help.
"It was quite an impact. The car was pretty wrecked. I mean, it was one of those things that happened so fast," Steven said. "It just looked like that person was coming in this direction and veered off and his car hit the bus on the passenger side. He was definitely crossing over in front of her."
NBC 10 News was at the scene and caught video showing the bus's windshield window completely torn off and a station wagon's passenger side completely totaled. Steven and his wife say the bus driver appeared to have no injuries, but the other driver was shaken up.
"He was bleeding from his arm and his hand, but he was going into shock, and we had to try to get him down on the ground," Susan Bacon said. " We were making sure he wasn't having any internal injuries as best as we could tell and get him down and when he was laying down, he started turning blue."
First responders were quick to arrive at the scene, and Steven and Susan said the driver of the station wagon was alive when leaving the scene.
Durham School Services said it owns the bus and that the company is cooperating with police during the investigation.
The cause of the accident has not yet been released.
