A Gordon Murray S1 LM supercar has sold for $20.6 million at an auction held during Las Vegas Grand Prix week, setting a new record for the highest price ever paid for a new car at auction. The sale took place on November 21. 2025, at the amfAR charity gala, where the first chassis from the five-car run was the star attraction.
The moment was staged for maximum impact. The S1 LM arrived suspended under a helicopter and dropped into the Wynn Las Vegas venue in front of bidders on site and around the world. A fast round of competitive offers pushed the car to a number that now sits at the top of the global charts for a new production vehicle sold at auction.
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles confirmed that Chassis 1 sold for $20,630,000, establishing a new benchmark for a non-charitable sale. This car is the final chassis from the five-unit production run, making it one of the rarest new supercars to cross an auction stage. The company positioned it as the first and most exclusive expression of Murray’s design principles, with a focus on lightweight engineering, a 4.3 litre V12 rated at 720 PS, a six-speed manual gearbox, and a body made from ultra-light carbon panels. The styling references the McLaren F1 GTR that won Le Mans in 1995, linking the project back to one of Murray’s most recognizable achievements.
The buyer now enters a detailed specification process guided directly by Gordon Murray. That includes sessions to tailor every detail of the car, development drives with Dario Franchitti, and access to the engineering team as the car moves toward completion. The package also includes a 500-page monograph that documents the creation of the S1 LM from sketches to final development. Murray described the sale as a defining moment for the brand and a sign of the value placed on the engineering approach behind the car.
The S1 LM was first shown in August 2025 at Monterey Car Week, where all five cars were reportedly purchased by a single buyer. Aside from the record-setting sale of Chassis 1 in Las Vegas, Gordon Murray Special Vehicles has not released further information about the other four cars or their delivery timeline.
Chef Gordon Ramsay’s makeover of the premium F1 Garage fan viewing and hospitality location during the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix was such a success that Ramsay and the Formula 1 organization are bringing it back ten times during the 2025 F1 season. The F1 garage is the premium 3-day trackside viewing opportunity located in the F1 paddock and pit lane.
Starting with the 2025 Miami Grand Prix May 2-4, Gordon Ramsay and his team of executive chefs will prepare and present cuisine from a curated menu of gourmet dishes. The chef will use locally sourced ingredients and pair the dishes with expertly prepared signature cocktails.
Why F1 chose Gordon Ramsay for the F1 Garage
Formula 1 collectors have a rare opportunity to bid on a historic racecar driven by two of the 20th century’s greatest drivers. RM Sotheby’s accepts registration from parties wishing to bid on the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen that F1 five-time World Champion Juan Manual Fangio drove to win the 1955 Buenos Aires Grand Prix.
Why the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Stromlinienwagen is so special
The W 196 R was the Mercedes-Benz car built for Grand Prix racing when the company returned to racing after World War II. The car’s success in the 1955 season design demonstrated the company’s resources and readiness to dominate. Different bodywork was used in different races. For example, when Fangio drove the car in Buenos Aires, it had an open-wheel body.
General Motors announced a new company established with TWG Motorsports to create new powertrains for the potential GM/Cadillac Formula 1 team that so far has only tentative approval to become the 11th team for the 2026 season.
The new company, GM Performance Power Units LLC, will be located in North Carolina, close to the GM Charlotte Technical Center.
Why GM announced the engine company now
The timing of this announcement might seem a bit odd since the GM/Cadillac F! team doesn’t have final approval by the FIA and F1, but the nature of the potential approval dictates an early start.
