At the September 2025 State Of Play, Gran Turismo 7 had a surprise appearance.
Series producer Kazunori Yamauchi not only announced the entire Gran Turismo series has now sold 100 million copies, but also a big update to GT7: The Spec III Update.
Gran Turismo 7 Spec III Update is bringing a bunch of new content and features that will the community still actively playing the racing game sorely needed. We’re not getting one track, but two. Both of which are currently in the F1 calendar: Yas Marina Circuit (Abu Dhabi) and the long-rumoured Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve (Montreal).
The State Of Play (and subsequent post on Gran Turismo’s site) also teased four of the eight coming cars. Two of them are race cars. One is an unlicensed take on a Formula 1 car of the early 2000s, the other is… a Ferrari 296 GT3. That’s right, a brand-new, current, racecar. GT7 is skipping the 488 GT3 altogether (the game only had the 458 GT3 as the modern Ferrari Gr.3… which is more than 10 years old now) to bring the latest GT3 machinery from Maranello. This is also the car used by a certain Franz Hermann when he was driving at the Nürburgring. A Mitsubishi FTO (a GT staple) and a Mine’s tuned Skyline GT-R (also a GT staple) are nice additions too.
Another cool feature teased is the data logger. This lets you see a graph of your throttle and brake input. It’s something real race drivers and race engineers look at a lot when talk about “the data”, as comparing these lines allows drivers to find areas where they can improve- maybe brake a little later, get on the throttle earlier. This will definitely be useful for the competitors in the Gran Turismo World Series.
Two other interesting changes is the removal of expiry dates for car invitations. Some cars in GT7 can only be purchased with an invite, which drops randomly, and such purchases must be made within a certain time window. One screenshot shows that you can now earn these invites permanently, and it’s unlockable via levelling up the Collector Level, which now has an increased level cap going beyond 50.
Here’s the list of new changes as per the Gran Turismo website:
The Gran Turismo Spec III Update will be arriving this December. It’s also dubbed Update 1.64, which means this is the next game update after this month’s recently released update, Update 1.63. That update had to go live one day earlier so that it does not come after the Spec III announcement made on the State Of Play broadcast, we presume. Imagine the confused players learning about a new update is coming, seeing an update appearing, only to learn that that wasn’t the update they were talking about on the broadcast.
Gran Turismo 7 didn’t have a big Spec update at the end of last year as developers Polyphony Digital put efforts on releasing a free demo, My First Gran Turismo. The previous end of last year saw the Spec II update.
Gran Turismo 7 is still getting updated and support, with this being its fourth year since release.
Gran Turismo 7 Spec III Update will drop sometime in December for PS4 and PS5.
