Honda released photos of the new Civic Type R HRC Rally XP ahead of the full reveal at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.
The Rally XP will compete in the American Rally Association and looks mostly stock from the outside, simply gaining some extra cooling ducts and a set of white wheels.
Inside, there's a full roll cage and far less trim than the road-going Type R, but the manual transmission is joined by a manual handbrake.
As the car market homogenizes towards forgettable crossovers, the Honda Civic Type R stands out as a beacon of driving enjoyment, with its combination of a punchy 315-hp engine, a six-speed manual, and an agile chassis. Now, however, the Civic Type R is set to embark on a new adventure, with Honda announcing the new Civic Type R HRC Rally XP, which will be officially unveiled at the United States Grand Prix this weekend outside Austin, Texas.
Honda hasn't revealed too many details just yet on the rally-spec Civic, but it wears a sweet-looking red-white-and-blue HRC livery, paired with a set of white wheels wrapped in knobby all-terrain tires. The livery also features American Rally Association (ARA) logos, suggesting that it will be entered in the next season of the ARA National Championship.
The bodywork doesn't look too different from a standard Type R. The towering rear wing is still in place, and the large intake in the front bumper remains, although an additional set of ducts has been added next to the vertical slits on the outer edges. The most noticeable differences are a series of new vents in the hood to help with engine cooling, but the triple exhaust setup has also been ditched in favor of a single pipe.
The cabin, however, is a big departure. Gone are the red bucket seats, the door panels, and the standard digital gauge cluster. Instead, there is a roll cage, a pair of racing seats, a simple OMP racing steering wheel, and a new digital instrument panel with built-in shift lights. The climate controls have also been swapped out for some physical controls, although the main 9.0-inch touchscreen is still there.
Thankfully, the manual transmission also remains, and now features a tall manual handbrake lever next to it. We expect the Civic Type R to retain its turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, although likely with some modifications to both the motor and transmission for racing duty. The suspension and limited-slip differential will also likely be upgraded.
More details about the HRC Rally XP should emerge this weekend. The car bears Liam Lawson's name on the rear window, suggesting that the driver of the number 30 Racing Bulls F1 car may do a demonstration drive of some kind at the Grand Prix to show off Honda's new rally racer.
