Hungary’s National Ambulance Service is expanding its fleet with 101 new ambulances by the end of the year, the Ministry of Interior’s State Secretary for Health Péter Takács announced on Monday at Budapest’s Heroes’ Square, where the first 20 vehicles were presented.
Since the start of the current government’s term, 1,160 ambulances have been replaced, bringing the average age of the vehicles to below six years, Takács said. He emphasized that not only the vehicles themselves are new, but also the life-saving technologies inside them represent the latest international standards.
‘The development of emergency services requires constant adaptation in equipment, IT, and dispatch systems to meet global standards. Today, the Hungarian ambulance service stands among the world’s best,’ he stated.
Takács highlighted that Hungary’s unified national emergency service is unique in Europe, allowing for consistent, high-quality care across the country. Ambulance stations are strategically located to ensure optimal response times, and uniform vehicle equipment guarantees equal treatment everywhere.
‘If the State Secretary for Health can say that Hungary’s ambulance service not only matches but in some ways surpasses its Western European counterparts, that’s something to be proud of,’ he remarked.
Director General of the National Ambulance Service Gábor Csató said that the organization is investing 9 billion forints in the purchase of 101 new vehicles this year. He noted that the COVID-19 pandemic and the disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine temporarily slowed global production and supply chains, delaying vehicle procurement. However, he added, this process is now regaining momentum.
Csató expressed pride in the ambulance service community and the organization’s commitment to operating under unified protocols with one of Europe’s most modern fleets. ‘We are proud of our colleagues and of a service that works together as one, with cutting-edge equipment and professional dedication,’ he said.
