They accounted for 34.7% of all sales, according to new data from the Association of European Manufacturers, with 2,485,069 new registrations.
Meanwhile, plug in hybrid sales increased to 631,783 units, which represents 8.8% of the market compared to 6.9% for the same period last year.

However, petrol and diesel registrations both suffered falling sales, with new petrol registrations down 19.7% to a 28.1% share of the market and diesel falling 25.7% to just a 9.4% share.
