A witness to a fatal crash in Salford has spoken of the moment he desperately tried to pull people from the wreckage of a car. The New Year's Eve tragedy happened at around 7am on Cadishead Way.
The vehicle crashed at the roundabout near Irlam Locks. Tragically, one person died. Another person was taken to hospital seriously injured, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said.
A witness has now spoken of the moment the vehicle crashed. The man, who asked not to be named, said: "I witnessed this on my way to work. It really didn’t look good. I tried to get them out."
The man said he saw the car drive 'straight into the roundabout', hitting a tree in the centre. The vehicle, he added, landed on its roof following the crash, coming to a stop on the other side of the roundabout.
"I tried my best to get people out, but the car was just a wreck," he said. A police officer this morning described the crash as 'one of the worst' accidents he had ever seen.
Neighbours have also spoken of their shock after waking up to a large emergency services presence. One resident on Townsgate Way said: "It's New Years' Eve. Imagine getting that knock on your door today." Another said the roundabout is 'notorious' for accidents.
She said the crash is the third accident to have happened in the past couple of years. "This roundabout is notorious. 2025's not even ended yet and we've had another one", she added.
A large cordon remains in place around the area this afternoon as specialist officers continue to carry out accident investigation work. A police tent has also been erected next to the scene of the crash.
A stretch of Cadishead Way remains closed in both directions, with people being urged to avoid the area. In a post on social media, a GMP spokesperson said: "#INCIDENT | We are currently attending a road traffic collision on #Cadishead Way.
"Roads are closed in both directions. Please avoid the area where possible. An update will be provided."
