A tragic two-vehicle collision Tuesday evening claimed the life of a 15-year-old-old Armuchee High School student and left two others injured. The crash occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of Georgia Loop 1 and Calhoun Road, according to the Floyd County Police Department.
David Clemones, (pictured) a student-athlete at Armuchee High, who was a passenger in a red pickup truck involved in the collision, passed away from injuries.
The driver of the red pickup, a 16-year-old student-athlete at Armuchee High School, has not been publicly identified. He also sustained serious injuries and was transported to Atrium Health Floyd. Officials say that the injuries to the driver are not life-threatening.
A third vehicle, a Dodge Ram, driven by Matthew Mathis, 56, of Rome, was also involved in the crash. The driver of that vehicle was taken to Atrium Health Floyd for treatment. Reports said that their injuries were non-life-threatening.
The Floyd County Police Department said preliminary reports indicate that the 16-year-old driver of the red Chevrolet pickup turned left in front of Mathis.
Charges are pending an investigation.
School officials and community members have expressed shock and sadness at the loss of Clemones, describing him as a dedicated athlete and a beloved member of the school community.
More information will be provided as the investigation develops.
