Stellantis just confirmed a $13 billion investment strategy for its US operations, the largest in the company’s 100-year history. It detailed that the process will generate thousands of jobs by ramping up production at US plants while introducing new vehicles. At the Warren Plant specifically, Stellantis said that it would begin production of a new full-size SUV featuring REEV and ICE powertrain options by 2028. An internal leak suggests that a new SUV will come from one of its least likely North American brand: Ram.
According to the leak, Stellantis CEO, Antonio Filosa, held a town hall meeting detailing a $100 million investment plan for its plant in Warren, Michigan. The subject of this alleged meeting was the new body-on-frame SUV that would begin production utilizing both REEV and ICE powertrains at the Warren plant. The source also claims that the vehicle featured in the presentation was clearly under the Ram brand.
Ram currently only produces pickup trucks and vans, with the “Ram” name being used exclusively for these types of vehicles for decades. That doesn’t mean SUVs are uncharted territory for the brand, though. The Ramchargerwas its answer to the Ford Bronco and Chevrolet Blazer, introduced in 1974 with a production lasting until 1993 in the US.
While the name Ramcharger originated with the Chrysler engineering drag racing group of the 1950s, it’d take on new life with Mopar’s ultra-rugged SUV in later years. Recently, Ram tried to revive the name by attaching it to its 1500 Ramcharger REV. With that project being cancelled, it may very well appear on the all-new SUV. Though, this is purely speculation as nothing in the leak points to that being the case. All that can gather with the information provided is that, should this plan go forward, we could expect the new Ram SUV to share much of its DNA with the 2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The new Grand Wagoneer does feature both ICE and REEV powertrain options and is built at the Warren Truck plant.
The introduction of a new full-size SUV at the Warren Plant would be great news for the workforce. The plan would allegedly create 900 new positions and possibly even restore the plant’s second shift. Further adding to the excitement is that this would be just the start. In the aforementioned $13 billion investment strategy, Stellantis did state that an all-new mid-size truck is on the way, along with two new Jeep models, the next generation of Dodge Durango, and even a new four-cylinder engine. All of which would add to job creation at other US Stellantis plants.
