Mercedes-Benz wants to get you excited about the next-generation AMG GT 4-Door, and it’s found one heck of a way to do it. A new teaser shows off the car’s active aerodynamics elements, and we’ve never seen a car with splitters that can move like this one. The AMG is going to be a rocket on track, but a nightmare in the Trader Joe’s parking lot if you forget the retract button.
We’ve known for a while now that Mercedes-Benz has been working on a new AMG GT 4-Door. This time around, Mercedes-AMG’s rocketship for four is going to be electric, and that means incredible levels of horsepower.
How much power? The concept car that previewed this one, called the Concept GT XX, has three axial flux electric motors from Benz subsidiary Yasa. They deliver 1,341 horsepower, enough to propel it to multiple speed and endurance records that would challenge gas cars, not just other EVs.
We’ve spotted prototypes of the production car out testing already. Those cars have spent plenty of time on Germany’s Nürburgring, the race track where all German automakers put their best through development hell. This one was even out there in the driving rain, turning hot laps in miserable conditions.
The new teaser shows the active rear diffuser sliding out to generate maximum downforce. The entire rear panel slides out what looks like six inches or more, ready to help adjust and improve the car’s balance when its driver is pushing it as hard as possible. Above that splitter are Benz’s new super-cool star-logo lamps. It looks like a smiley face from some angles, but it’s really just to make sure you know the brand.
If the AMG GT XX Concept wasn’t your style, don’t worry. The production version looks very different.
The ducktail spoiler above the lamps, though, is a bigger deal. It’s a massive aero element, which should add even more downforce at the rear of the car. In theory, it will dial in the flow of air over the back without making excess drag like a tall wing.
This isn’t the first teaser for the new car. Last fall, Mercedes-AMG teased it with brand spokesperson Gabriel Macht – best known as Harvey Specter on Suits. That time we could see much more of the car, but it didn’t appear to have the moveable rear panel, and the rear spoiler was much shorter.
We can’t confirm why, or if, Mercedes-AMG has made changes to the car as a result of testing. We expect, though, that there will be different trims and variants, and we’re simply seeing those in various teasers.
AMG has Swiss-cheesed this GT prototype, and we’re looking at why.
The current gas-powered AMG GT 4-Door is offered in five versions. The 3.0-liter I6-powred AMG GT43 makes 362 hp, while the same engine delivers 429 hp plus a 21-hp electric boost in the AMG GT53. Meanwhile at the top of the line, the GT63 has a 577 hp 4.0-liter V8 and the GT63 S makes 630 from the same engine. For buyers who want more, the GT63 S E-Performance uses the 630 hp V8 and an electric motor that boosts combined output to 831 hp.
