The Renault Duster was once one of the most popular mid-size SUVs in India. It first arrived in 2012 and quickly gained attention for its rugged build, strong ride quality and value-for-money pricing. However, as the segment evolved with newer and more feature-rich rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, the Duster began to lose market share. Eventually, the model was discontinued in early 2022 due to falling sales.

Now, Renault is bringing the Duster back. The new-generation model is scheduled to launch in India on 26 November 2026, and it plays a very important role in the company’s long-term growth plan.

In the past few years, Renault’s presence in the Indian market has weakened. Its lineup lacks a strong mid-size SUV, and the brand’s market share has slipped to below 1%. The new Duster is expected to be the key model that helps Renault rebuild its position.

The mid-size SUV segment is currently one of the biggest and fastest-growing segments in India. This is where the Duster originally made its name. If the new model offers the right combination of features, price and performance, it could attract both old fans and new buyers.

The new Duster is based on the CMF-B platform and features a more premium and mature design inspired by the Dacia Bigster concept. It is expected to come with updated technology such as a larger touchscreen system, digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone connectivity and advanced driver assistance systems. These are all key expectations in today’s market, where people look for tech-rich interiors along with strong performance.

Engine options are likely to include both naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol powertrains. A strong hybrid option may also be introduced later to appeal to customers who want better fuel efficiency without moving to diesel.

The biggest question is whether the new Duster can recreate its earlier success. It will enter a space dominated by cars like Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara, Hyryder and Elevate. These models are well established and have built loyal customer bases.

However, the Duster still enjoys strong name recognition. Many buyers remember it for its tough build and comfortable highway performance. Early interest already suggests that there is excitement around the comeback. For Renault, pricing will be the most crucial factor. If the Duster is positioned competitively, it could attract a large number of buyers.

Renault aims to increase its market share to around 3% by FY27. The Duster is expected to lead this growth. The company is investing heavily in manufacturing and model updates to strengthen its foundation in India.

Ultimately, the new Duster has the potential to regain sales but success will depend on how well Renault balances design, technology, performance and pricing in a segment that is more competitive than ever.

If Renault gets the formula right, the Duster could return not just as a familiar name, but as a strong force in India’s SUV market once again.
