A resident described the noise of a tree crushing a car like "gunshots in the woods" in Torbay.
The incident, which happened in Torquay, saw a tree crush a carport and a car at around midnight today (Wednesday, September 3).
The tree had fallen in a lane from the woods behind Teignmouth Road, according to a witness.
The witness told DevonLive that when the tree fell down it sounded like gunshots and then fireworks.
They said: "Last night, at midnight, a tree fell in the lane from the woods behind 197-209 Teignmouth Road and crushed a carport and car.
"The noise was like gunshots in the woods and then huge fireworks as the tree was splitting."
The witness added that the lane which the tree had fell onto had become impassable due to the tree splitting.
The tree had blocked the lane earlier this morning, although it is unclear if the lane remains blocked this afternoon.
The witness added: "It is now impossible to drive through the lane from one entrance to the other."
