OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — Both directions of I-196 reopened after an over 100 car pileup and several jackknifed semi trucks injured between nine and 12 people on Monday.

A multi-car pileup formed on west I-196 from 32nd Avenue to 64th Street just after 10:20 a.m., evolving into an over 100 car pileup including multiple jackknifed semi trucks, and an estimated 30 to 40 semi trucks involved overall, causing a complete closure of I-196 heading west and east for about 10 miles from Zeeland, Mich. to Hudsonville, Mich., according to Ottawa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) deputies and Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers.
All injured people are in the hospital as of 2:37 p.m. and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) deputies said there were between nine and 12, all nonfatal.
Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max Transit took stranded motorists from the crash site, where winds are being recorded up to 40 mph with 6 to 12 inches of snow forecasted, to Hudsonville High School.

Preliminarily outlooks show mostly fender benders, slide-offs and minor injuries, Ottawa County dispatchers said.

The crash comes as the National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for much of West Michigan.

Strong winds mixed with numerous lake effect snow showers are creating whiteout conditions and travel is not advisable.
