No matter how wealthy you are, you won’t be able to buy a brand-new Koenigsegg – not even the newly revealed Sadair’s Spear, which is limited to just 30 units. The Swedish marque and purveyor of awesome high-octane machines just doesn’t have a build slot left. But that doesn’t mean that the one-percenters don’t have anything to watch out for. As per Christian von Koenigsegg himself, two new models are coming, as well as an exciting idea that nobody else thought of.
CarBuzz spoke with Mr. von Koenigsegg at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and the founder and head honcho has confirmed that as early as next year, a new car will be introduced. It will be a homage project, which tells us that the upcoming supercar will be in line with what it did with the CC850 – a tribute to the original CC8S that’s loosely based on the Koenigsegg Jesko‘s architecture.
“So we have another cool homage project we’re doing that we will be presenting next year. And then after that, we have a new platform, a mid-engine car coming out… probably [at the] end of next year.”
– Christian van Koenigsegg
Koenigsegg didn’t share any specifics about this homage project, but it will likely be based again on the Jesko. However, it appears that it will be the last one to use the Jesko’s proverbial bones as the boss also mentioned that a new mid-engine car based on a new platform will be introduced after that. Even better, it will possibly be hitting the spotlight as early as the end of next year.
It’s a guessing game at this point as to what Koenigsegg is cooking with its new mid-engine platform. However, we’re positive that it will still be combustion-powered, since the automaker has already confirmed that the V8 will stick around, armed with two turbos and possibly getting the 800-horsepower Dark Matter electric motor’s help for an outrageous amount of power. We’re also not discounting the return of the Freevalve-headed Tiny Friendly Giant (TFG) three-cylinder engine since it’s still very much around.
Those two new cars aren’t the only things worth waiting for from the Swedish marque. Known for groundbreaking engineering innovations like its Direct Drive Transmission and HydraCoup of the Regera, or the manual/automatic gearbox of the CC850, Koenigsegg isn’t just done yet with its penchant for reinventing the wheel. When asked about the next crazy idea that no one else has thought of, Koenigsegg said that they have a few of them in store.
“You will see. So we have some very cool ideas for our upcoming audience. I’m so excited for it,” Koenigsegg said. “But when you see it, it’s like, of course, ‘Why did no one do that before?’ And so we have a few – four or five – of those. This should have been done, and we’re doing it.”
