There has been a hole in the Lexus lineup ever since the LFA and its wailing V-10 departed. Tame, quiet, and plush models have been buttering Lexus' bread, so to say, but the luxury arm of Toyota might be back to building sports cars very soon. A new concept model that just dropped at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering during Monterey Car Week suggests that the return would be spectacular.
The new coupe is stunning, with wide, bubbly hips and a sloping roofline that ends in an active rear wing. Lexus did not provide any information about that new concept model and, while it's styling is actually Toyota Supra-esque, our previous reporting suggests this new sports car concept should be tied to a road car that is far from a replica of its Toyota sibling.
Our last glimpse at the imminent Toyota or Lexus performance car came during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, where two versions ran in camouflage form. Racing has birthed most of the world's truly great cars and the new Lexus model is no different, even if it will have to prove itself worthy of such accolades. Toyota first teased a new race car back in 2022, revealing it was building a Gazoo Racing GT3 racer that is set to enter the grid in 2026. It seemed only natural that a road car would follow.
That race car has been spotted testing since, but Toyota brought both racing and road-going varieties of the new flagship GT car to Goodwood. Differences between the GT3-spec car and the road-going model include a massive rear wing on the race car and what appeared to be a different wheel offset or tire setup on the road car. Comparisons between the camouflaged Goodwood competitors and unveiled concept model show nearly identical styling, especially around the rear-end.
A 2022 Road & Track interview with a Lexus executive illuminated the brand's benchmarking race cars, one of which was the Mercedes-AMG GT. Of course, there are some shared proportions here, but name dropping Affalterbach's crown jewel GT3 racer also opens the door to speculation about a turbocharged V-8 powerplant and weight balanced by a rear-mounted transaxle. Specific details about the powertrain and drivetrain are not yet available, but we can only hope our ears don't deceive us after the sonic display at Goodwood.
Whatever powertrain it holds, Toyota's newest flagship sports car and race car are almost here. This concept reveal brings hope for that final Lexus GT car and, with details seemingly dropping consistently all summer, it seems likely that all will be revealed by the end of the year.
