A section of the M4 has been closed following a horror crash, with drivers on the motorway facing long delays and lengthy traffic queues. National Highways said the M4 eastbound between junction 18 (Bath) and junction 17 (Chippenham) has been closed following a “single vehicle collision”. It added that Wiltshire Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, and South West Ambulance Service are all at the scene of the crash. All traffic caught within the closure was turned and released via “rearward relief”, with National Highways warning the closure is likely to remain in place until this afternoon.

“We are sad to report that a 32-year-old man has died following a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle on the M4, in the early hours of this morning.
“The man’s next of kin have been informed and they are receiving support from specially trained officers. Our thoughts are with them.
“Another man who was in the car is receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries.
“The collision took place at about 2am this morning (30/11) on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between Junction 17 and Junction 18.
“Wiltshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Team is appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have dash cam footage taken from the time to contact them on 01225 694597 quoting log number 40 of today’s date (30/11).

Leave the M4 at J18 and take the 3rd exit onto the A46 south towards Bath.
Follow the A46 for approximately 3 miles to the roundabout with the A420 at Cold Ashton and take the 1st exit onto the A420 east towards Chippenham.
Remain on the A420 for approximately 10 miles to reach the Bumpers Farm Roundabout with the A350.
At Bumpers Farm Roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A350 northbound towards the M4/Cirencester and continue on the A350 until you reach J17 of the M4.

Traffic England has labelled the M4 crash “severe”.
It said the incident might not clear until 4.40pm, with normal traffic conditions resuming around this time.
The M4 eastbound entry slip at junction J18 remains closed.
The event is expected to clear between 3.45pm and 4pm, with normal traffic conditions resuming between 3.30pm and 3.45pm, Traffic England said.
The incident occurred near Leigh Delamere services.
It said: “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead. You may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
The vehicle crashed this morning after leaving the M4 eastbound carriageway near Leigh Delamere services.
National Highways said: “At around 02:00 Wiltshire Police responded to a serious single vehicle collision involving a car which left the eastbound carriageway near Leigh Delamere services.
“The carriageway was closed to allow Wiltshire Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service and South West Ambulance Service to work at the scene of the collision.
“National Highways Traffic Officers attended the scene and assisted the emergency services by providing traffic management at both the scene and at J18.
“All traffic caught within the closure was turned and released via rearward relief.
“Although no definite timeframe can be given for re-opening at this stage, early indication suggest the closure will remain in place throughout this morning and into the afternoon.”
National Highways said the M4 eastbound between J18 (Bath) and J17 (Chippenham) could remain closed into the afternoon, though this timeframe is not set.
