
The motorway is shut northbound between junctions 21-20 and southbound between junctions 19-21. Dramatic images from the scene indicate that a vehicle burst into flames. It is unknown at this time if there have been any injuries, how many vehicles were involved, or how the incident unfolded. Overnight footage from the scene of the crash shows a number of firefighters battling the billowing blaze.

Drivers have been warned of severe delays, with officers remaining on the busy route. Lane one on the northbound reopened at around 8.30am.
Investigations are now underway.
In their latest update, a spokesperson for the National Highways said: “Avon and Somerset Police are carrying out investigations at the scene.
“The incident occurred at approx. 23:05 last night. Avon & Somerset Police and the ambulance service attended the scene.
“Closures remain in place on the southbound carriageway for recovery and clear-up work
“Lane 1 has reopened on the northbound carriageway.”
The police-led incident “is expected to clear between 11:15 and 11:30 on 1 December 2025”, according to National Highways.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed officers are at the scene of a serious crash on the M5 in Somerset.
In a statement, the force said: “Emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision on the M5 between junctions 20 (Clevedon) and 21 (Weston-super-Mare). The M5 has been closed in both directions, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.”
Bristol Airport travellers may also be affected by the closure.

Those travelling southbound should follow the hollow circle symbols via the the A4 Southbound and the A38 to Edithmead to re-join the M5 at Junction 22 for Burnham-on-Sea.
Those travelling northbound should follow the solid triangle symbols via the A370 through Congresbury, West Town and Long Ashton towards Bristol, and the A4 Westbound towards Avonmouth, to re-join the M5 at Junction 18 for Bath.
