Drivers faced huge delays this afternoon after five vehicles crashed on the M56. Cheshire Police were called to the M56 eastbound from junction 14 near Ellesmere Port following reports of a crash.
There were no reports of any injuries, police said. Though the damaged vehicles were swiftly moved to the hard shoulder, long delays remained – with congestion stretching back to the M53 junction.
One motorist posted to Facebook: "M56 Eastbound [five]-car pile up by Stanlow Services. It didn’t appear to look serious. Services. Queues for miles already. Emergency en route."
Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "Long delays due to accident, now on the hard shoulder on M56 Eastbound from J14 A5117 (Chester Services / Helsby) to J12 A557 (Runcorn)."
National Highways posted on X: "There are delays of at least 50 minutes on the M56 within J14 (Ellesmere Port) due to a collision. Vehicles involved have now been moved to the hard shoulder and traffic has now been released."
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: "At 1.53pm today police were called to a five car collision on the M56 eastbound between 14 and 12.
"The cars were in lane three and were moved to the hard shoulder. There were no reports of any injuries."
