The M57 remains closed in both directions this evening after a car left the motorway and caught fire. Emergency services were contacted shortly after 3pm today, September 10, following reports of a single vehicle collision on the M57 in Knowsley.
Emergency services arrived to find a car had left the motorway and caught fire on the northbound carriageway close to junction 3. The condition of the driver or any passengers has not yet been confirmed.
An air ambulance was seen landing at the scene, alongside multiple fire engines, ambulances, and police vehicles.
In a post on X, National Highways said: "The M57 northbound is closed between J2 (Prescot/Huyton) and J3 (near Knowsley) due to a serious collision."
It added the M57 northbound will be closed 'throughout the evening'. Motorists on the motorway reported traffic was at a 'standstill'.
Traffic reports indicate severe delays, with congestion extending back to junction 1 (Tarbock Island). Drivers have been advised to avoid the area, with traffic being diverted through Huyton.
