A car has burst into flames on the M8 sparking an emergency response this morning.
Fire crews were called to the busy motorway after the alarm was raised at around 10.30am on Thursday, October 30.
The incident happened eastbound between junctions six and five, near Newhouse in North Lanarkshire. That section of the busy road has been closed off while emergency services deal with the incident. Traffic is also restricted westbound.
Pictures showed the vehicle engulfed in flames with a plume of thick black smoke seen billowing up into the sky.
A fire engine could be seen arriving at the scene as other vehicles slowly passed by. Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
Traffic Scotland raised the alarm with a post on X/Twitter. At 10.50am they said: "The M8 is closed eastbound due to a vehicle fire.
"Traffic is restricted westbound due to smoke. Road users should approach with caution and allow extra time for their journey."
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The M8 is closed eastbound near Newhouse, due to a vehicle fire which was reported around 10.30am on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
"Emergency services are in attendance and motorists are asked to avoid the area."
