NEWPORT, Maine (WABI) – Back in August, we brought you the story of a Maine Veteran who was gifted a car through the Maine Veterans Project.
Robert Brown was using his new car in part to further his education.
At the time of the donation, it was known the car’s water pump had been leaking a bit.
But, after the car broke down, Varney Ford in Newport agreed to diagnose the problem and discovered the leak had caused considerable damage to the engine.
After the Maine Veterans Project purchased a new engine, Varney offered to install it free of charge.
Now, Brown is back on the road and is set to continue furthering his education.
“Having them fix it after all this has been incredible. These guys went way above and beyond for me. I can’t say enough good things about them,” said Brown.
“You know, a vehicle is tenfold. It’s somebody’s nutrition. It’s somebody’s ability to get out of their house for mental health support. In this instance, it’s the ability to, you know, get your education and go out and better your life. A vehicle in rural Maine is as important as anything else that we have as an amenity,” said Doc Goodwin, president of the Maine Veterans Project.
The Maine Veterans Project still has a handful of veterans in need of a car.
