A man and his 6-year-old son were killed Wednesday after they were struck by a vehicle while walking in east Vancouver.
Vancouver police responded to the crash about 1:20 p.m. in the 6400 block of Northeast 137th Avenue, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, police said first responders found the father lying in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The boy was found in a ditch about 10 feet away from the crash site and taken to Randall Children’s Hospital in Portland, the news release states.
In an update Wednesday evening, the police department said the boy had died from his injuries.
Authorities did not identify the father and son.
The 73-year-old driver, identified by police Wednesday evening as James H. Paulson, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Paulson was booked into the Clark County Jail on two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of DUI, police said in the update.
Police had said earlier in the day that reckless driving, speed and possible impairment were factors in the crash.
The department’s traffic unit is continuing to investigate.
