A 53-year-old man has been arrested after a man was found dead in a car park near Newcastle.
Police said the man in custody was seen running along the Pacific Highway in Charlestown after reports of an assault.
Emergency services were called to the scene near a Charlestown shopping strip around 9:50am after the man was found unresponsive.
Officers from the Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene at the site but are yet to publicly identify either person.
Charlestown South and Charlestown Public School were in lockdown while the manhunt was underway, with police warning that school pick up and after school care arrangements could be impacted this afternoon.
Police are expected to address the media this afternoon with more information.
