A man has been found dead in a vehicle after a fiery crash in an Upstate New York hospital parking garage.
WHAM reports a vehicle burst into flames Wednesday after striking about 10 cars on the second floor of the Portland Avenue parking garage at Rochester General Hospital. The vehicle came to a rest and then caught on fire, Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello said.
More than 20 firefighters responded to the blaze, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. The man, who was in the driver’s seat of the vehicle that hit multiple parked cars, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m. Officials are working to determine the man’s identity and what caused the crash.
No other injuries were reported. All of the cars that were struck by the vehicle were unoccupied at the time, police said.
“There (were) people in the parking garage at the time, and so we’re working through talking to those people to find out what information they have — if they simply heard something as minor as a crash above them, or if they all the way up to saw what happened,” Bello told media.
According to WHAM, the parking garage was closed for the rest of the day as investigators worked the scene. Vehicles that were in the garage at the time were allowed to exit.
The garage is expected to reopen Thursday morning, but some sections will remain closed off as cleanup continues. WHAM reports a structural assessment determined no significant damage to the garage’s integrity.
The hospital remains fully open and operational, Rochester Regional Health said in a statement. An official told WHAM that hospital workers were being offered support “through different resources to make sure that they can talk through just that traumatic experience.”
